“I think you’ll find it’s a bit more complicated than that.”
— Ben Goldacre

Since taking on the role of Head of Higher Education & Research at Sage Gateshead in 2010, I've been an active academic researcher, with main interests in music education, participatory music, group singing, music philosophy and community music (CM). I achieved my doctorate (DProf) in 2016 for my work on 'music in three dimensions' which advanced a philosophy of music where musical performance and participation are united through a shared concern with music's impact on people and society. Since then, I've focused on developing a stronger understanding of group singing as a way of promoting the creativity, social capital, health and wellbeing of those who participate in it, especially those on the margins of society.
